Located near the top of one of Australia’s best known beaches, Byron Bay is blessed with stunning natural landscape and beautiful sandy beaches. The site has steep contours and is closely flanked by a three level building to the north and a single storey to the south. With an unrestricted panoramic vista of the Pacific Ocean towards the north east when viewed from the highest point of the site.

The house was designed with three large vertically staggered plates linked by a fully glazed circulation atrium to take advantage of the steep contours. The mid level plate is used for living, dining, an open plan kitchen and entry. Two bedrooms and a master bedroom with en suite are stacked on the top. The basement level consists of two fully self contained guest bedrooms with platforms that open to the sun. Planning involved placing two open sided boxes of different lengths in parallel to each other and creating an internal courtyard separated from the street by the glass atrium. A suspended precast concrete lap pool adds drama to the courtyard with its glass infinity edge, and focuses the user towards the ocean.
