AUCKLAND CITY // NEW ZEALAND
The Mediterranean Shipping Company allocate container shipping space for worldwide clientelle and wanted to setup new premises overlooking the Ports dock operations area on the top floor of the historic Northern Steamship building. The space offered the company natural brickwork external walls and a warehouse-like multi-gable roof space with exposed timber and steel trusses and services.
The proposal includes a gallery arrival area looking over the harbour like a ship’s galley. A ‘cargo ship crating’ timber lattice wall and wheel-house separate the reception and gallery from an open plan workspace, raised on a new flooring platform. Curved glazed partitions with seafaring decal imagery surround the open plan area workspace and provide storage, shared meeting rooms and private offices on the port side. On the starboard side timber shutters, fixed and sliding, surround the open plan workspace and provide screening for utility, toilets and stair access.
